“I don’t think it’s possible for me to write in a major key” says Katie Stelmanis, lead singer/songwriter of the Canadian trio Austra. Stelmanis, drummer Maya Postepski and bassist Dorian Wolf have created a dark and amazing confluence of classical and electronic on their LP Feel It Break mixed by Damian Taylor (Bjork, The Prodigy, UNKLE) that is ghoulishly groovy. A collection of sleazy, afterhours new wave, deeply rooted in Stelmanis’ operatic upbringing, it conjures other edgy, experimentalists like Bjork, Diamanda Galas, The Knife and Klaus Nomi. The Sparkle EP features 3 singles from the LP mixed in an array of tempos from Mark Pistel’s skittish, disco-wave remixes of “Lose It” to the pure electronic sleaze of Still Going’s “Beat And The Pulse”. MNDRN and Steffi turn in bewitching, midtempo house grooves and Young Galaxy goes for a good grind.
